Swimming lessons at Engjaskóli

Swimming lessons at Engjaskóli take place at Grafarvogslaug pool. Students attend swimming lessons once a week for 40 minutes throughout the school year. Students must bring swimwear (no bikinis) and goggles. Please send children in clothing they can easily change in and out of. Long hair should be tied back. We recommend parents label all clothing, towels and swim bags with names and phone numbers.

Swimming lesson information

Grade 1

First grade swimming lessons are on Fridays at Grafarvogslaug indoor pool.

Group 1

Bus leaves school at: 08:30am
Lesson starts at 8:40am
Bus leaves pool at 9:35am

Group 2

Bus leaves school at: 09:10am

Lesson starts at 9:20am

Bus leaves pool at 10:15am

 

By the end of the school year, students should be able to:
 

  • Stand on the bottom and breathe in, submerge face and exhale repeatedly 10 times
  • Float on stomach or back
  • Walk with face submerged for 2.5 meters or more
  • Perform breaststroke leg movements
  • Perform front crawl leg movements
  • Jump into the pool from the edge
     

For good results, students should practice swimming with parents/guardians occasionally.

 

Grade 2

Second grade swimming lessons are on Thursdays at Grafarvogslaug indoor pool.
 

The grade is divided into three groups:

Group 1

Bus leaves school at: 08:30am

Lesson starts at: 08:40am

Bus leaves pool at: 09:35am

Group 2

Bus leaves school at: 09:10am

Lesson starts at: 09:20am

Bus leaves pool at: 10:15am

Group 3

Bus leaves school at: 09:50am
Lesson starts at: 10am

By the end of the school year, students should be able to:

  • Float on back with arms and legs extended

  • Push off wall and glide face down for at least 2.5m

  • Swim 10m breaststroke

  • Swim 10m backstroke legs

  • Swim 10m front crawl

  • Jump into pool from edge

  • Dive from crouched position

Grade 3

Third grade swimming lessons are on Thursdays at Grafarvogslaug outdoor play pool.

Grade 4

Fourth grade swimming lessons are on Thursdays at Grafarvogslaug outdoor pool.

The grade is split into two groups. Note that students are not always in the same group.

Group 2

Bus leaves school at: 11:40am

  • Swim 15m backstroke
  • Swim 15m front crawl
  • Swim 15m back crawl
  • Perform butterfly leg movements
  • Retrieve object from 1-2m depth after 3m swim
  • Dive from crouched position

Grade 5

Fifth grade swimming lessons are on Tuesdays at Grafarvogslaug outdoor pool.

The grade is split into two groups. Note that students are not always in the same group.

Group 1

Lesson starts at Grafarvogslaug at 10:25am

Bus leaves Grafarvogslaug at 11:20am

Group 2

 Bus leaves school at: 10:55am

Lesson starts at Grafarvogslaug at 11:05am

Bus leaves Grafarvogslaug at 12pm

 

By the end of the school year, students should be able to:

  • Swim 75m breaststroke

  • Swim 25m backstroke

  • Swim 25m front crawl

  • Swim 25m back crawl

  • Dive from edge

  • Retrieve object from 1-2m depth after 5m swim

  • Tread water for 20-30 seconds

  • Swim 10m butterfly legs

  • Clothed swimming (details to come)

Grade 6

Swimming lessons lessons are on Tuesdays at Grafarvogslaug outdoor pool.

The grade is split into two groups. Note that students are not always in the same group.

Bus leaves Grafarvogslaug at 12:40pm

Group 2

Bus leaves school at: 12:15am

  • Swim 200m breaststroke

  • Swim 50m backstroke

  • Swim 50m front crawl

  • Swim 25m back crawl

  • Swim 25m breaststroke timed

  • Swim 15m rescue (backstroke legs)

  • Swim 8m underwater

  • Swim 12m butterfly

  • Dive from edge

 

For good results, students should practice swimming occasionally.


 

Grade 7

Seventh grade swimming lessons are on Thursdays at Grafarvogslaug outdoor pool.

Group 1

Bus leaves school at: 12:20am

Lesson starts at Grafarvogslaug at 12:30pm

Bus leaves Grafarvogslaug at 1:25pm

Group 2

Bus leaves school at: 1pm

Lesson starts at Grafarvogslaug at 1:10pm

Bus leaves Grafarvogslaug at 2:05pm

 

By the end of the school year, students should be able to:

  • Swim 300m breaststroke in less than 10 minutes

  • Swim 25m backstroke

  • Swim 25m back crawl

  • Swim 15m rescue with partner (backstroke legs)

  • Swim 8m underwater

  • Swim 12m butterfly

  • Dive from edge

  • Timed: 50m breaststroke, 25m front crawl and 25m back crawl
