Emphasis is on students demonstrating knowledge and skills in various ways. Grades reflect continuous work throughout the year, not just final exams. Assessment is visible to students and parents in Mentor.
Teachers’ role
Teachers inform students if they've met goals and guide them on how to improve.
At the end of the school year, teachers review student competency profiles and summarize performance into one
Competency grade
Competency-based educational assessment isn't about symbols, numerical grades, A-D letter grades, or percentages, but rather how well students perform against specific criteria. Instead of a math test showing that a student got 80% of problems right, competency-based educational assessment explains which skills the student has mastered. For example, it might show that the student understands coordinate systems but needs more practice or help with equations and inequalities.
At the end of the school year, teachers review student competency profiles and summarize performance into one grade based on age-appropriate competency scales.
The competency scale is as follows;
- A Student has demonstrated outstanding competence in the subject
- B+ Student has achieved all competency goals and demonstrated outstanding competence in several projects.
- B Student has achieved most competency goals
- C+ Student needs practice in some important competency goals in the subject
- C Student needs practice in most competency goals in the subject.
- D Student has not achieved necessary competency goals in the subject.
Students who do not achieve necessary competency goals always receive a written assessment from the teacher along with their grade.
